Pomegranate Wine

Pomegranates were initially cultivated in the region of the Caucasus, and gradually spread further to the East to the areas of the Himalayas. Nowadays, is widely cultivated across the world in many countries.

The word “pomegranate” comes from the Latin “pomum granatum” which means “apple with many seeds.” The exact number of seeds in a pomegranate can vary from 200 to 1400, and the perception that all pomegranates have the same number of seeds, it is not true.

The pomegranate has been mentioned in many ancient texts like the Homeric Hymns, and has been for centuries the symbol of good luck and prosperity.

Recent scientific studies have shown that pomegranate consumption is very useful since it contains a significant amount of antioxidants. 1100 ml of pomegranate juice has three times more antioxidants than 100 ml red wine or green tea. The health benefits are almost legendary.

The systematic pomegranate consumption helps the prevention of lung, prostate, and breast cancers, of osteoarthritis, heart diseases and Alzheimer.

There are many prodcuts that can be produced from pomegranates. One of these is the pomegranate liqueur, and various pomegranate sauces used in salads and for marinating meat. Pomegranate seeds are also used as a garnish in salads and many traditional local desserts.

There are different varieties of pomegranates in the world, but not all of them are suitable for winemaking.

A relatively easy to manufacture product, is the pomegranate liqueur, which is a result of the juice boiling with added sugar. Several decades ago, it was a common household consumer product, and it is no coincidence that we find it even today in many homes.

However pomegranate wine, is something completely different, and the reason is the difficulty and complexity of the production process.

Actually it is the art of winemaking in its perfect form!.

The modern facilities of the winery, the careful selection of high quality raw material and years of expertise, make the big difference. This unique wine is the result of the natural fermentation of the fruit juice, without added alcohol, produced with traditional techniques very similar to normal grape winemaking. During the fermentation process that takes place in modern stainless steel reservoirs the important and beneficial properties of the fruit are protected and maintained.

Then is followed by the aging process in oak barrels. The aging process gives to the final product a bright, clear, attractive deep red color with a rich aromatic bouquet of fruit, balanced between pomegranate and blackberries. In addition the final product forms its rich structure, spicy flavor and velvety pomegranate aftertaste.

With this difficult and time consuming process, the initial components of the fruit are maintained, making it a very important source of antioxidants, nutrients and vitamins.

The pomegranate wine is produced in two different types, semi- sweet and semi-dry, and also in a special very limited handmade pomegranate shaped bottles of different sizes.

The semi-dry can be consumed alone as a fresh drink, but also accompanies perfectly cooked dishes such as red meat stew, pasta sauces, rice, vegetables, spicy cheese, meats, salads, fruits and desserts.

The semi-sweet, is mostly consumed cooled alone as a drink in winter or summer, but also accompanies perfectly dishes with salads, fruits and desserts. These wines can be consumed pleasantly in winter but especially slightly cooled during summer evenings.

Its ideal serving temperature is between 12 to 15 degrees.
